A joined-up approach to logistics is at the core of 4PL services, and has particular relevance in urban environments, where access may be restricted to certain times of day, or where other concerns like congestion and air pollution may be on the minds of hauliers.

One approach that aims to tackle all of the challenges of urban logistics at once is the school of thought known as City Logistics, which serves as an umbrella term for all of the efforts made to optimise road haulage in a city environment.

A paper published in the International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications in late July looks at 70 European cities, all of which have introduced City Logistics initiatives in recent years, to identify the aims and reasons behind the launch of those schemes.

The authors from Politecnico di Torino in Italy write: “Results reveal that the level of pollution, the diffusion of e-commerce and GDP are important drivers of City Logistics deployment.”

Across Europe, cities are optimising urban freight distribution to maximise revenues, minimise air pollution, and respond to modern day challenges like the need to fulfil ever faster delivery of goods ordered online.

City Logistics is just one example of how this is being achieved – and of the sorts of measures taken by 4PL service providers both in urban environments and on intercity supply chains too.

Tackle the City with 4PL

Although it’s impossible to rid the streets of traffic completely, careful logistics planning can ensure that you make your deliveries when congestion is at its lowest, while eliminating empty running so your vehicles are on the roads less overall.

3T Logistics can help to manage your transport processes in order to achieve this, to keep your deliveries on time while reducing congestion for fellow road users.
